Daniel Medina

Speech-Language Pathologist

I help kids keep, learn, and improve skills and functioning for daily living.

When did you first know you wanted to pursue a career in therapy? I decided as a youngster to become a speech therapist. I received speech-language therapy as a child. I was one of those children not identified early enough with middle ear infections, leading to problems with both my speech and language. I like to think I'm all better now!

Who inspires you in your profession? I first became inspired by a handful of my professors when I was in university. The passion that they showed for their chosen areas of speech pathology made me look forward to working with children and adults with all types of communication disorders.

What is your favorite way to engage with kids? I enjoy engaging with children on their level (typically on the floor) and following their lead in the play setting.

Tell us about a challenge that you watched a child overcome. I watched a child overcome an immense difficulty using a variety of /r/ sounds with a correlative impact on his reading skills. By working hard on these sounds and gaining a greater recognition of how they appear in print, he was able to achieve grade-level reading skills and increase his interest in reading. I was very proud of him.

What do you enjoy doing outside of work? I enjoy playing with my children, going to the gym, following the Atlanta Braves, and watching a good television show on Netflix. I do enjoy reading, but it's hard to find time to do so with small children (constant interruptions).

Anything else that you’d like to share? I used to be a great deal more fit. I've run a half-marathon, triathalon, and completed a Super Spartan Race.
